An Important Message Regarding Training Courses Across the Drainage Industry

News

Dear Members, It has recently come to our attention that a number of training providers are either offering or developing courses for the drainage industry. This is in addition to existing providers delivering training that is not approved by NADC. As you are aware, the NADC’s training division, the National Drainage Academy, delivers a comprehensive range of well-established courses covering all key aspects of day-to-day operations. These include CCTV surveying, HPWJ, electro-mechanical work, lining, and excavation and repair. All courses are endorsed by Energy & Utility Skills. While the NADC/National Drainage Academy does utilise third-party training providers, every course and trainer is subject to a rigorous vetting process prior to approval. The NADC remains fully committed to raising industry standards through certification and supporting opportunities for our members. To maintain these standards, it is essential that we apply consistent due diligence, ensuring quality is upheld for the benefit of stakeholders, contractors, and, most importantly, their clients. We strongly encourage all drainage contractors—whether current NADC/Drain-Safe members or those considering joining—to verify with us which training courses are officially recognised. It has become evident that some external courses do not meet the required standards and will therefore not be accepted. As many of you will know, the Drain-Safe approved contractor scheme continues to gain significant recognition among key stakeholders, including water companies, local authorities, and professional trade associations. Increasingly, NADC/Drain-Safe accreditation is being specified within tender documents. It is therefore vital that field engineer certification aligns with the high standards and quality associated with the Drain-Safe ethos. A full list of approved training courses and providers is available on the National Drainage Academy website at www.nationaldrainageacademy.co.uk, or by contacting Martin Beattie on 07531 239 372

The Real Impact of the National Drainage Awards 2025: West Country Drainage Services

News

The Real Impact of the National Drainage Awards 2025: West Country Drainage Services One of the most rewarding aspects of the National Drainage Awards is seeing the difference they make beyond the awards night itself. Recently, we received touching feedback from West Country Drainage Services, winners of the Small Contractor of the Year Award at the National Drainage Awards 2025, and their words perfectly capture why these awards matter so much. A Tough Industry, Built on Determination Drainage is a challenging trade, particularly for small businesses. As the team shared with us: “Drainage is a tough world and there are times when we have really struggled… surviving on pure hope that the phone would ring.” Starting with very little, they built their business through resilience and belief in doing things the right way. “We built upon nothing and we now stand tall in the knowledge we always offer honesty.” The Impact of Recognition Since winning their award in November 2025, West Country Drainage Services have already seen meaningful benefits: “Since winning the awards we have seen such benefits already. It has firmed our position of putting trust back into the trade and has helped with our status in the industry. We have had customers call to say they want to work with us as they were looking for trust. Councils using us more regularly.” Why the Awards Matter Their feedback highlights the real purpose of the National Drainage Awards — recognising integrity, supporting hard-working businesses, and raising standards across the industry. “I just wanted you to hear first hand on what you have done for us by holding these industry awards and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We are forever grateful for the opportunity.” To Jody, Leanne, and the West Country Drainage Services team, thank you for sharing your journey. We are proud to celebrate your success and look forward to seeing what comes next. And to our readers – keep your eyes pealed for information on the next drainage awards, which will be November 2026! Find out more about West Country Drainage Services here You can see more photos from last years awards ceremony on our blog post here and if you’d like to see videos from the evening please subscribe to the National Drainage Awards YouTube channel where we will soon be uploading the 2025 videos (but in the mean time you can see videos from the 2023 and 2024 awards on there)

One Year On – What’s Blocking Britains Drains?

News

One Year On: What’s Blocking Britain’s Drains? Last year, the National Association of Drainage Contractors (NADC) and DrainSafe teamed up to ask our members a simple question: “What is the most common reason you find for a blocked drain?” The 2024 results painted a clear picture: 42.4% blamed fats, oils and grease (FOG) build-up. 40.7% pointed to inappropriate items being flushed — everything from wet wipes to nappies and even underwear. 8.5% cited misaligned pipes. 6.8% said tree roots. Back-ups from the sewer were too rare to register. Now, one year later, we’ve run the same survey — and the picture has shifted! 2025 results: Inappropriate items flushed: 33.3% (down 7.4%) Fats, oils and grease: 37.5% (down 4.9%) Misaligned pipes: 12.5% (up 4%) Roots: 8.3% (up 1.5%) Backing up from sewer: 8.3% (previously negligible) What’s behind the change? The drop in blockages caused by foreign objects could be a sign that public awareness campaigns are working. Over the past year, there’s been growing public discussion about sewer overflows — and how flushing wipes, sanitary products, and other items can make them more likely by restricting water flow and causing blockages. Campaigners have played a big role in getting that message across, using everything from social media to local events to highlight the environmental cost of poor flushing habits. It’s encouraging to see that this message appears to be cutting through — fewer inappropriate items in drains means fewer avoidable overflows and cleaner waterways. While this improvement is welcome, the rise in issues from misaligned pipes and sewer back-ups suggests more structural problems in the network. This could point to ageing infrastructure, shifting ground conditions, or heavier rainfall events putting extra strain on pipework. Roots are also creeping up (literally), showing that nature still plays a role in drain disruption. The takeaway: Education campaigns around flushing habits and FOG disposal seem to be having an effect — but keeping drains clear isn’t just about what goes down them. It’s also about maintaining and upgrading the infrastructure beneath our feet.

What Our Members Say

All of us at Drain24/7 Ltd would personally like to thank Peter and Martin for all their hard work that they are doing trying to save our industry from drowning. We decided to join the NADC, because they bought it to our attention What the water industry was trying to do behind our backs The NADC have spent so much time trying to get to government to listen even through the ups and downs and I’m sure there are many doors closed in their face but they’ve never given up the fight to try and save all our businesses. This is one of the reasons why we joined the NADC. Join the NADC now because drain24/7 Ltd believe that all of us together will make a big difference with NADC’s leadership and representation.
Drain24/7 Ltd
“I have attended several NADC meetings and have been amazed by the progress they have made in such a short time, and by the hard work that has been done by a few for the good of many. The future is very worrying for smaller drainage contractors and it is time we all stood up together to be counted. The NADC is exactly what we have needed for a long time, no time more important than now, with the imminence of the Private Sewers Transfer looming in the not too distant future.” “I will fight to preserve and protect the business that my late husband, Gary, and I have worked hard for years to build, but like most small business owners, on my own I couldn’t take on the big boys – but together we can show them that we are a force to be reckoned with. In the longer term, I believe that the NADC can introduce a recognised standard for our industry to provide assurance to our clients whilst reducing much of the red tape we currently have to go through. I have already been advertising the fact that I am a proud member of the NADC, with their logo on our fleet of vehicles and soon to be added to our website and stationary.”
Anne Gifford, MDSouthern Drain Services Ltd, Essex
“Since forming LDF, 5 years ago we’ve been very focused at delivering extremely high standards ascertaining H&S standards with CHAS and Safecontractor, being accredited by Exor Management services and being issued the Platinum award for Cscs commitment. We know commitment to standards is recognised by serious customers, the NADC compliments this very point and promotes a real possibility of recognised standards being seen for the industry. Business owners wanting to experience the lowest impact possible come October 2011, need to show solidarity with the NADC and move forward offering full support.”
Danny & Lucie FullerLondon Drainage Facilities Ltd.
“With the imminent drain transfer looming Pro-Drain Ltd became a member of the NADC to be heard and contribute to saving our right to compete for business on a level playing field. Long term we see NADC membership criteria providing the consumer with welcomed assurance when choosing a drainage contractor.”
Tony Cody, MDPro-Drain Ltd.
“We decided to join the NADC, because we felt that they genuinely had the drainage industry at heart and could best represent the small businesses, at a time when no one else had even given due consideration to our needs as a company. We believe that all of us together can make a big difference with NADC’s leadership and representation”
Manuel Santana, ManagerCity Drains
“It has been well worth joining the NADC knowing that at long last the industry is being regulated. The membership fee that we have paid to join the association is a very small price to pay knowing that we are being represented and more importantly involved in discussions regarding the impending transfer. We would like to say a HUGE thank you to the NADC for all their support. We are proud to be a member. We have found the NADC to be an invaluable source of advice and information. We would have no hesitation in recommending membership of the NADC because of the professional way in which they help their members and are only always a telephone call away.”
Diane & Kevin Andrews - OwnersDrain & Able
“I attended the first London meeting with 45 other companies and I have been amazed at how much progress the NADC has made with DEFRA, Steering Committees and other bodies. Having said that, I am equally bemused by the attitudes of many small drainage contractors that think this legislation isn’t going to happen or it won’t affect them! There is no doubt in my mind this transfer will take place in 2011 and my strong recommendation is that drainage contractors and suppliers should join the NADC now.”
Paul Woodhouse - DirectorWinCan Europe Ltd.
“MG Drainage Ltd joined the NADC because of the coverage they are achieving in trying to find a resolution for Drainage Contractors in relation to the Private Sewers Transfer. They are effectively a ‘one stop shop’ for information and progress on this bill and have the welfare of Drainage Contractors as their primary concern. The committee members are all actively involved in the Drainage Industry and therefore are more than aware of the concerns that we all face, they are also a non profit making organisation. Since the NADC has been formed they have made steady progress in the right direction to safe guard our Industry and we feel we would be in a worse position without their efforts. We would urge all Drainage Contractors to join to ensure we have the best chance of protecting our businesses.”
Mick Grant - MDMG Drainage Ltd.
“We were involved almost from conception and could see the value of having an association as the voice of the industry. The importance of specific training seemed significant as did the emphasis on working to standards. We have been heavily involved in promoting the organisation, providing training solutions and advising where appropriate mainly because we see the NADC as an excellent cause. The NADC has come a long way with the help of its members both on the ground and at the board and committee level. Long may it continue.”
Ian Cameron - Development DirectorViewline
